News / Pond and Reed-Bed Restoration Project

This major programme of work is almost complete. It has been funded by Biffa Award (www.biffa-award.org), a multi-million pound environment fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT), which utilises landfill-tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services
. Since September 2014 we have worked with contractors to de-silt the big pond, dig irrigation channels into the reed bed, and fell or pollard some dominant willows that were drying out the reed bed, providing vantage points for predators, and overshadowing the three small pools. By next Spring the pollarded trees will be sprouting again, and wild flowers will be emerging in newly created patches of sunlight in the woods. Water Voles, butterflies, and Reed Warblers will be among the beneficiaries, we hope.
